Airwave Weekly (11 September 2026)

The first edition, catching up on a couple of busy weeks of updates.

Airwave Weekly (11 September 2026)

I ship a lot of small releases, and almost all of it disappears into the changelog where nobody reads it. So I'm going to start writing a short weekly rundown of what actually changed.

This first one is a catch-up, because the last couple of weeks turned into 48 releases across the TV apps, the server, the AI tools, the desktop app, and the site. Here's what changed for you.

The short version

  • HDR on Android TV and Fire TV now plays at the right aspect ratio, and rewinding no longer restarts the program.
  • Fixed a rare Apple TV freeze, the NVIDIA Shield purple-screen bug, and a transcode stall at around five minutes.
  • Fire TV and Roku are live in their app stores.
  • Big AI lineups build reliably now, and there's a new cloud model option that plans a lineup for under a cent.
  • You can clone a channel and copy filters between channels.
  • The desktop app stays awake during playback and can launch at login.
  • New promo video, roadmap voting, and refreshed docs.

The rest of this post goes through each of those in a bit more detail.

Playback

HDR on Android TV and Fire TV got a real overhaul. HDR movies and shows now play at the right aspect ratio instead of being zoomed or stretched, switching between HDR and SDR programs is smooth, and rewinding back into an earlier program no longer restarts it from the beginning. Airwave now works out the right video path before playback starts, from the program's actual color information, instead of guessing partway through.

A few other playback fixes landed too. The rare Apple TV hang that could lock up the app, usually right after a bumper, is gone. NVIDIA Shield SDR playback that came out as a purple screen is fixed. And transcoded streams no longer stall after about five and a half minutes.

Platforms

Fire TV and Roku are both in their app stores now, alongside Apple TV and the native Windows and macOS apps. iPad and Android TV are still working through review and testing, and the browser player runs everywhere in the meantime.

AI channel-building

Big lineups build reliably now. There was a timeout that used to kill long builds, and it's fixed, so a full lineup actually finishes. I also added Z.ai (GLM) as a cheap cloud option: it can plan a whole lineup for well under a cent, or you can pair a cloud planner with a local worker model and generate channels for close to nothing without a GPU. Local models got better too, with a filter-building fix and a switch to turn off "thinking" for the models that support it. The run view now shows exactly what the AI is doing while it works: live progress, token and cost breakdowns, the full planning transcript, and a dry-run preview before anything is written.

Admin

You can clone a channel now instead of rebuilding one by hand. You can copy a filter off one channel and paste it into another, with a preview of exactly what you're pasting. And the channel list picked up tooltips and package hover cards, plus a live preview (with posters) of an unsaved channel's filter as you build it.

Desktop

The desktop app keeps your machine awake during playback, recovers cleanly if it crashes, and gained run-at-login and silent-start options.

Site and docs

There's a new promo video, with a short post to go with it: See Airwave in action. The home page got a refresh, there's roadmap voting so you can tell me what to build next, the blog got rebuilt, and the docs picked up a generated changelog and a local development guide.

Getting involved

There's a new pnpm dev:setup wizard that takes a contributor from a fresh clone to a running dev environment in a couple of minutes, plus contributing and security guidelines.

That's the catch-up. These will be shorter from here. If you want to steer what comes next, the roadmap is the place to vote, and the full technical history always lives in the changelog.
